Hope Chest

What is the Hope Chest?

Beacon’s Hope Chest is a “free store” that allows people who are experiencing a difficult time to shop for clothing, pick up a bag of food or some toiletries. To assist with an increasing request for food, clothing and personal items, Beacon Church opened the “Hope Chest” in January of 2009. The “free store” idea started on a mission trip to New Orleans in May 2007 to help with Katrina Relief.  While there, church leaders encouraged us not to make our “Katrina” experience a one-week thing…but challenged us by asking, “What can you take home to your own community?” The church in New Orleans had a free store in the aftermath of the hurricane, and the vision for a free store at Beacon began to develop. Two years later, in January 2009, that vision became a reality. The store is open Tuesday morning from 10-11:30 AM and Wednesday evenings from 5-6 PM. It is located within the church building and is open to anyone in our local communities (Absecon, Galloway, Port Republic, Cologne, Pomona, Egg Harbor City) in need of assistance.

Ways to Get Involved

Give of your resources:  We collect ‘in season clothing’, non-perishable food, toiletries and monetary donations.  Print SHOPPING LIST to take with you to the store!

Give of your time:  You can help out in the Hope Chest (you’ll be scheduled 2 hours a month when the store is open) or work behind the scenes (sort clothes and stock shelves) when it is convenient for you.

Create your own drive: Whether you’re a part of a scout troop, school club, sports team, or any other group, here’s your chance to be creative!  Collect food, toiletries, winter coats, or any of the other items we need.  Great group bonding as you strive to reach whatever goal you set; plus, you’ll be able to bless others in the process.
